Richard Owen Sieler

September 6, 1927 ~ July 15, 2017 (age 89)

Richard (Dick) Owen Sieler, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior at his home in Sequim, WA on July 15, 2017.  Richard was born to Theodore Victor and Phoebe Marie (Nelson) Sieler September 6, 1927 in Omaha, Nebraska.  

 

Richard spent his early years in Anoka, Nebraska and Bridgeport, South Dakota. The family moved to Washington in 1941, and Richard graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1945.  He enlisted in the US Navy and served until August 1946.  After discharge, he attended Olympic Community College and the California College of Chiropractic in Oakland, California, graduating in 1951.  He became the athletic trainer for the Spokane Indians Baseball Club.  While working, he attended Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington and graduated with his education degree.  At Whitworth he met Betty Loreen Barkema, and they were married in Glendive, Montana on August 15, 1954.

 

Richard and Betty left Spokane for Westport, Washington in 1956.  They taught for the Ocosta School District.  Dick taught History, English and PE and coached basketball and football.  The Wildcats qualified for the state basketball tournament in 1959 under his guidance.  The Sielers moved to Centralia, Washington in 1962, and Richard began a long teaching career at W.F. West High School.  He taught History, Civics, Economics and CWP, coached basketball and football, retired in 1987.

 

Richard was honored with the Teacher of the Year for the State of Washington in 1986.  Dick and Betty retired to Sequim in 1993 and have lived between Sequim and Palm Desert until death.  Richard is a member of the Peace Lutheran Church, in Palm Desert, California. 

 

Richard is survived by his wife, Betty, his daughters, Jeannine (Jay) Sieler of Woodinville, WA; Stacey (Tim) Trimble, of Montesano, WA; sister, Mavon (Dave) Capron of Seattle, WA; brother Gordon (Marianne) Sieler, of Carlsbad, CA; grandchildren, Tyler, Kale and Kara Trimble of Montesano, WA and numerous nieces and nephews. 

 

A memorial for Richard (Dick) Sieler will be held July 28, 2017, at WF West High School from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.  Respecting Dick’s requests a few brief remarks will be shared at 3:00 PM.
