Life Legacy
LaVerle Ackerman
A funeral was held for Quilcene resident LaVerle Ackerman, who died June 21, 2010, at the age of 82.
She was born April 16, 1928, in Maiden Rock, Wis., to William and Neila Alexander Leavitt. She attended school in Discovery Bay, Lake Leland, Quilcene, Port Ludlow and Chimacum.
She married Alvin Ackerman on Jan. 6, 1948, at Col. Webster Cook's home in Port Townsend. She was a homemaker, worked with her husband in the woods cutting shakes with their children in the 1950s and 1960s, and ran their secondhand shop.
She loved traveling and said she was like a gypsy, always on the road.
She was a member of Washington Old Time Fiddlers and World War II Normandy Battle of Bulge in Gig Harbor.
She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary for 37 years.
She loved cooking, baking, gardening, flowers, painting handmade windmills her husband made, car shows and trains.
She is survived by her husband, Alvin Ackerman of Quilcene; son and daughter-in-law Janet and Kenneth Alvin Ackerman Sr. of Quilcene; daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Bernie Hilsabeck of Damascus, Ore.; Susan and Patrick Cook of Sequim; and Kristy Ackerman of Quilcene; brother Gary Leavitt of Quilcene; sisters Berniece Jackson of Davenport and Wanda McCone of Forks; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
